The Mission Committee

The Mission Committee of First Presbyterian Church is very active in our community as well as the world.  We strive to make this one of the most active groups in our church.  We have a very supportive and mission-minded congregation.  Some of the missions that First Presbyterian Church has been active in are:

ERIN WARMING CENTER:  Our church had numerous members participate in the Erin Warming Center in January. This mission provides a warm place for all who are in need of shelter in Macomb County and provides a valuable bridge between other shelters in this most crowded time of the year for shelters.

MISSION LUNCHEON: Our church held the 3rd annual Mission Luncheon at MacRay Restaurant in May.  Joan Emerick and Jennifer Ghandour did a wonderful job coordinating this event. Our congregation raised $4,886 for local mission projects.

CROP WALK:  Our congregation raised $4,124 to help the Church World Service organization (CWS) make a difference in the lives of people around the world. CWS works to provide self-help development, disaster relief and refugee assistance in more than 80 countries.

MCREST: FPC hosts MCREST which with the help of the congregation provides support for 30 homeless men (i.e. shelter, food, showers, laundry, entertainment, spiritual guidance, etc.).  Many other FPC members actively participated in a truly "hands on missionary experience." We have agreed to host MCREST next year (June 7 thru 14, 2009).

SCHOOL BACK PACK MISSION PROJECT : Thanks to the generous support from our congregation, 60 back packs filled with school supplies were delivered to disadvantaged children in two area preschools.

ANGEL TREE MISSION PROJECT: Christmas is a time of the year where ALL children should recieve something special.  This project provides 45 need children at two area elementary schools with gifts.  The congregation eagerly and generously provides for this mission.

FPC DONATIONS:
Donations from our mission budget are sent to Presbytery to be used for a variety of purposes including:  Per Capita,Shared Mission ($3,609), Medical Benevolent Foundation ($300), Theological Education Fund ($200) and Fort Street local mission ($500). In addition, special offerings were taken in 2008 to support our Presbytery and local mission programs.

FPC DONATIONS (from the Mission Budget) were sent to other organizations involved in local mission activities, as follows:  Green House Project ($300), Mount Clemens Salvation Army ($800), Macomb Interfaith Volunteers ($100), Turning Point ($200) Crop Walk ($100), Good Shepherd Coalition ($300), Interfaith Center for Racial Justice/Martin Luther King dinner ($350), Erin Warming Center ($400), Care Breakfast ($274).

FOREIGN MISSIONARIES:  This year through the generous donation of a member of the congregation, we have begun to support the Whearty family whose Missionary Work is in Ethiopia. One member of our congregation has pledged $10,000.00 to the Whearty’s for this past year and the next year. In May the Whearty family spoke to our congregation.
